Dementia Dimensions

What is St. John’s Online Dementia Resource Center?

The St. John’s Online Dementia Resource Center is a resources hub for dementia caregivers at home to find answers to questions that come up on a daily basis. Answers to these questions that can guide you to a better understanding of your loved one with dementia. The Dementia Resource Center is a website that provides helpful information on a variety of dementia issues—like behavioral changes you may not immediately recognize, or if you notice that a loved one is unusually stressed or upset. Sometimes there are environmental or family issues that have an impact on you as a caregiver. We will also address more practical issues, like how to arrange respite care, how to keep your loved one entertained as (s)he goes through the day, how to deal with sundowning, how to talk about the death of a family member—and more.

Why St. John’s versus other dementia resources?

Of course, there are hundreds of places you can find out more about dementia. This one is special. It is locally based. It is practical and based on proven caregiving experience from our team, rather than simply being theoretical. And because we are continually learning through our application of best practices, the counsel provided here will change over time. As we learn lessons from our experiences providing care to residents at St. John’s with dementia, we will pass them on to you here.

At St. John’s, because of our long history of dementia care and skilled nursing care in Rochester, we have a unique perspective on the subject. We are not only experts, we are local practical experts with decades of learning and understanding on which to rely on. On this website, you will find articles, blog posts, videos, and other content with our own particular brand of wisdom, along with firsthand experience to get you through the day (and night). You will recognize some of our caregivers as they appear in videos, author blog content, or provide insight into the answers to questions we hear every day.

Not just information—useful tips, worksheets, products, and services, too.

Based on some of the tools we use at St. John’s to structure care for dementia patients, we have created online versions to share with you. You will find a template you can send for that will help you build JOY into your daily care routine. There are checklists to download to help with the many issues that dementia caregivers face, like how to prepare for a telehealth visit or how to deal with sundowning. And, we will help you discover support groups and local respite care when you need it.

Finally, when you reach a point when it is time to consider a caring alternative with the 24/7 monitoring that the most severe stages of dementia require, St. John’s can also help you work through that difficult decision.
